Wastewater System: Unauthorized Discharge

Please be advised that the Town of Fort Macleod has discovered that unauthorized pollutants, specifically large volumes of wood-based products, are being discharged into the municipal wastewater system. This has caused damage to equipment at the wastewater treatment plant and placed significant strain on the system.
This issue is limited to the wastewater system. The Town’s drinking water supply remains unaffected and is safe.
An investigation is ongoing to determine the source of the discharge. Landowners found to be disposing of this material into the wastewater system are in violation of the Town’s Wastewater Utility Sewer Bylaw No. 1991. Offences under this bylaw may result in fines or discontinuation of sewer service.
The Town takes this matter seriously and will take enforcement action where necessary.
The Town of Fort Macleod’s wastewater system is designed to handle only sanitary waste and water. Garbage and hazardous materials can cause blockages, damage equipment, and harm the environment.
Keep these items out of the wastewater system:
- Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG): Solidify in pipes and cause blockages.
- Wipes: Even “flushable” wipes do not break down and can clog pipes.
- Other “flushable” products: Diapers, dental floss, and personal care items should not be flushed.
- Hazardous chemicals: Gasoline, oil, paint, antifreeze, pesticides, and similar substances can damage the treatment process.
- Wood chips or shavings: Can damage equipment and strain the system.
- Other garbage: Any non-biodegradable items or general waste can harm pipes and equipment.
Why this matters:
- Clogged pipes: Non-biodegradable items and grease can cause sewage backups.
- Infrastructure damage: Improper disposal can harm pumps and treatment equipment.
- Environmental pollution: Hazardous chemicals can contaminate water and harm aquatic life.
- Treatment plant issues: FOG and other materials interfere with biological processes that break down waste.
Residents can help by disposing of waste responsibly, reporting illegal dumping, and spreading the word to neighbours. If you have any questions, please contact the Town Office at 403-553-4425.
