The Town of Fort Macleod is pleased to announce that the Stage 1A construction project of the Highway 3 realignment is scheduled to begin in 2026, thanks to a significant investment from the Government of Alberta.

Stage 1A will see the westbound lane of Highway 3 twinned to the existing eastbound lane, running from the Township Road 92 intersection to the Highway 2 junction. Alberta’s Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreeshen, said Wednesday that “the project will include the realignment of 3 kilometers of the westbound lanes of Highway 3 on the new east side of town, as well as new traffic signals at the intersections of Highway 2 and Highway 3.”

This phase marks the first step in a long-term multi-stage plan that will ultimately see both eastbound and westbound lanes rerouted to bypass the town entirely. Mayor Brent Feyter believes the project will be transformative for Fort Macleod, stating, “It’s a project that we’ve been advocating, as a town, for a number of years, to be able to create a safer entrance into the community, as well as more opportunity for economic development directly beside Highway 3.”

While Stage 1A is not the full bypass, it is an important development for the community. This infrastructure upgrade is designed to enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and unlock new opportunities for economic development by opening up a large parcel of land for future growth.

The Town extends its gratitude to the Province for their continued support and investment in our growing, vibrant community, and to MLA Chelsea Petrovic for her strong advocacy in helping bring this project forward.
