Mayor's Message

Welcome to the Town of Fort Macleod Website. My name is Shawn Patience; I am a Fort Macleod native and was first elected to municipal council in 1989 as a Town Councillor. I had the honor of being elected Mayor of this fine community in 2004 and was re-elected in 2007.

When this current term of office is complete I will have served on municipal council in parts of four different decades. I have seen many changes over the years and am very proud to say that Fort Macleod today sits poised to see its most dramatic growth in 130 years. With a very progressive council and a hard working, dedicated staff we have faced challenges with solutions and are proud to be part of new era of optimism. We truly have one of the most cared for and cared about communities anywhere in this country.

Fort Macleod, one of Alberta's oldest communities, has become synonymous with heritage preservation and interpretation. We are home to some of Alberta's most important historic resources, including Main Street, Alberta's first Provincial Historic Area as well as the original fort site, the 1884 barracks site, the Empress Theatre and the Fort Museum to name but a few.

However, even with all that history, it’s the future that has caught everyone's attention. After an exhaustive community effort in 2005 and 2006, against all odds and 34 other towns and cities, Fort Macleod earned the right to be the host site for the 270 million dollar Alberta Police and Peace Officer Training Centre. An estimated 1400 students and professional up-graders will be put through the centre each year, offering a tremendous boost to the local economy and adding to the storied policing history of this community.

We are strategically located on two major highways and as the new highway link begins to develop on the south side of the community with new commercial property being planned to develop around it, the future truly holds great promise. Fort Macleod takes great pride in its heritage and offers tremendous potential for its future. Whether you're looking for a great place to visit, raise your children, retire or start a business, take a look at our incredible community, you'll be glad you did.
